‘I could not have anticipated…how much more the trip would impact me’

(First of three parts – before meeting Daniel)

 At one point in our trip, it was said, “When you come to Uganda, it infects you.”  

In the best sense of that expression, I agree.   

The decision to join others from our church on a trip to Uganda, led by Mark Bartels, executive director, Uganda Christian University (UCU) Partners, was easy.  My husband and I had sponsored a young man, Daniel Edotu, from the time he was six years old, initially through Compassion International and now UCU.  We had never met Daniel who is now in his final year with UCU’s School of Law.

We found out about UCU Partners because a board member is from our church, Church of the Epiphany, Anglican, in Chantilly, VA, and because the UCU Vice Chancellor, and his predecessor, have visited our church.  We had encouraged Daniel to apply to UCU because we knew we could continue to help him through UCU Partners. Tuition payments to UCU are tax deductible donations in the United States, as UCU Partners has non-profit status.

As excited as we were to be able to visit Daniel in person, I could not have anticipated the depth of what our visit would mean to him, and how much more the trip would impact me.

Our flight on Ethiopian Airlines was over 18 hours long, going through Addis Ababa Airport (Ethiopia) where we changed planes, and flew into Entebbe airport near Uganda’s capital, Kampala. There, on a Saturday night after going through immigration and collecting our luggage, we were also able to exchange our dollars into Ugandan Shillings (UGX).  Everyone in our group had created a What’s App account, and this was very useful for group communication throughout our trip.  

We then loaded ourselves into a small bus, which in Uganda is called a “glider,” (or sometimes coaster) for the 40-minute drive to a Church Conference Center, where we would be staying for a few days. Driving in Uganda is on the left side of the road in each direction, as it is in Great Britain, so it was helpful that we were not driving ourselves around the country.

Members of our group each had a small booklet with Morning and Evening Prayer, Psalms and Readings, and journal pages, (a journal that now I treasure), and we gave thanks for our arrival, and prayed Evening Prayer on the bus, as would be our habit mornings and evenings for the rest of the trip.  

Sunday began early:  Up in time for breakfast at 7 a.m. and departure at 8 a.m. To our delight, there were half a dozen monkeys on the grounds between our building and the dining hall.  Every breakfast throughout our trip included offerings of fresh pineapple, watermelon and small bananas  as well as other options.   

Then we boarded our glider bus again to drive to St. Paul’s Cathedral in Kampala and join a joyful worship service there. English is the national language, and I had undervalued the comfort that would bring, to know that anywhere we went, we could understand and be understood.

Two others joining our group for most of the rest of the trip were Dorothy Tushemereirwe, from the UCU Development office, and Chris Mogal, a UCU graduate who has a video and photography business that he started while still a student.  Chris was hired by UCU Partners to take photos and video to create a video of our trip experience, both for us and for UCU Partners’ use. 

Our visit to the cathedral included a tour that highlighted some of the difficult early history of the Anglican and Christian Church in Uganda, which reveres the memories of a long list of martyrs who were tortured and executed for their faith.  We learned that Uganda is the country, Buganda is a kingdom and tribe (about 30% of the country), and Luganda is a language.

From the Cathedral and Anglican complex on a hill in Kampala, we then drove to the Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and location of a former Buganda King’s palace, in use from 1856-1884. Any women in our group wearing slacks instead of long skirts were given fabric to wrap around their waists and legs before being allowed into the complex.  We made our way to a large round thatched roof building and throne room, surrounded on the complex by other smaller similar structures, still inhabited and cared for today by descendants of the kings’ wives, where we were invited to sit on woven mats on the floor, as our guide shared the history of this place, and more about Uganda.  

This was our first opportunity to learn more about the Ugandan and Buganda culture:  Kings don’t die – they “disappear.” A king is not allowed to attend funerals, except for his father’s.  And a king is buried next to his grandfather, not his father, so he may rest in peace.  A man is not allowed to shake hands with his mother-in-law or even watch her eating.  A man cannot marry someone in his own clan. The King has no clan, and a former king took a wife from each clan.  Today, the king marries one person.  Even the architecture told a story. The first three concentric rings in the ceiling structure represent Kings, and each subsequent ring represents a clan.  

To my personal delight, the Kasubi Tombs tour concluded at a building where they showed us fabric made from the bark of the fig tree, considered one of the first textiles. This fabric was used as the canvas for many paintings available for purchase. My husband and I purchased two paintings, and I considered that answered prayer, as I had been hoping to find a work of art to bring home from Uganda.  

The next day we visited the Anglican Martyrs Museum at Namugongo, a museum built on the execution site where 13 Anglicans and 12 Catholics were tortured, dismembered, and burned on June 3rd 1886, now honored as Martyrs Day in Uganda.  Other martyrs who were killed elsewhere, and one white martyr, Bishop James Huntington, also are honored here.  Gruesome and graphic sculptures show what happened, paired with a mural on the ceiling showing Angels carrying the martyrs to heaven.  An adjacent building built around a small chapel includes other murals on the early history of the Anglican Church in Uganda. On Martyrs’ Day each year about 50,000 persons make a pilgrimage to this Kampala location.  

Equally impactful to understanding Ugandan history and deep-rooted Christian faith was our visit to Uganda Christian University’s young medical and dental schools. The UCU Schools of Medicine and Dentistry were founded in 2018 to address an acute need for medical and dental professionals in the country. Already UCU’s School of Medicine is renowned for excellence in Uganda.

Currently, only 50 students are accepted annually in the School of Medicine due to space limitations, though many more are applying for the program.  In order to expand the number of students they can take, they want to raise funds to build a location on the main UCU campus, where students could study for their first two years, and then use the Kampala campus for practical studies in medicine for the last two years. To create this building, UCU Partners and UCU will together need to raise $2 to $3 million. Long-term goals include having their own accredited lab, and building an entire teaching hospital complex. Once UCU has its own lab, they can apply for grants.

Uganda has few pathologists, and much lab work has to be sent to South Africa and other countries. I was impressed that UCU’s School of Medicine and School of Dentistry are moving forward in faith, having already written the curriculum for a future Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology. They also have almost completed the curriculum for a graduate studies program in medicine.  

For the UCU School of Medicine, the profession is about compassionate care, and making the world a better place. They shared that their mode of training health care workers is quite unique in including the spiritual aspects of health care. Both the medical and dental schools ask, “Can we create a doctor who will be a doctor and remain a Christian?” 

Pediatrics is a major emphasis, because parents will pay money to treat a child who is suffering, rather than to pay for their own care. Uganda also has a young population – due to losses of older generations in previous years of wars and conflict and because the number of children in a family continues as a traditional expectation. There are many young families in Uganda.  

Both here and at a clinic we later visited, obstetrics is another major area of emphasis.  By the time most women arrive at the hospital, they usually are having birth complications beyond the ability of midwives and others in the villages. Both medical and dental schools do some community outreach, going into underserved communities to have clinics and educate communities on health and hygiene.  Complementing the School of Medicine is the main  campus’ Nursing Studies program, which graduated its first class in 2012, and which also has a community outreach component to their studies.

Fixing Teeth at Koome Island, Uganda: A facilitator’s adventure

Not all adventures are created equal. Ask me – or maybe query a dozen Uganda Christian University (UCU) School of Dentistry students who recently traveled with me by boat to a remote island.

The moment I was carried, yes, carried, and plopped into a handmade boat fashioned of steel and wood, I was in for a ride and experience of a lifetime. Identically attired in  orange life jackets, the students, instructors, representatives of the UCU Directorate of Research Partnerships and Innovations, and others traveled with me across a not-so-calm Lake Victoria towards Koome Island, remotely located within central Uganda’s Mukono District.

More than 19,000 residents from as far as Western Uganda make the island their home. In the early 1900s, there were fewer occupants because  many fled or succumbed to a parasite-causing African “sleeping sickness.”

Today, cultures that include Baganda, Banyankole, Bakiga, Acholi, Langi, the Iteso and Lugbara gravitate here, with the lure of free land but little else. Houses are scattered with a church, one government health center and a primary and a secondary school on 3,000, mostly mosquito-free acres. Hand-crafted canoes and nets, scattered about the shoreline, tell the tale of meager economic support through catches of Nile perch and tilapia.

In short, and to help facilitate a dentistry school project of free services to economically-poor residents, I was stuck in the middle of nowhere.  Tourists and citizens find other nearby land masses like Ngamba-Chimpanzee Island for orphaned chimpanzees more familiar and attractive, and even livable with restaurant food and electricity. Koome, part of Kyaggwe Saza in the Buganda Kingdom, uses solar energy and sketchy generators.

A group of polished urban dwellers  and office-type urban colleagues, we arrived near Entebbe, 22 miles from Koome, with an expectation of a somewhat modern Packwach or Kalangala-like ferry, the kind you see in the honeymoon movies, replete with a roof, and wind sails.  I imagined the one I used at Kazinga Channel and pineapple bay,  but Koome’s ferry, we were told, got stuck somewhere. The Uganda government, noticing no sustainable commercial benefit from it, was reportedly not thinking of reviving it, but local government officials said that revival plans are underway.

The lessons of obstacles to accomplishment were just starting, albeit untimely and harsh.

Yet, zealous for our (worthy) dental mission among the island’s most vulnerable population, we felt nothing was going to hinder us.  The first shock was getting loaded (and I mean physically ) onto a boat. Along with a group of  University students and Dr. Arabat Kasangaki, a dentist and teacher, we allowed the rugged hands of a fisherman to carry us to the unstable swinging vessel.

After about 30 of us were nervously hauled onto the seemingly fragile, open-air wooden transport,  we navigated the June winds and the gale. The message that we would arrive “soon” was followed by more than two hours of a hair-and-clothing-wet journey of life jacket-tightening and, for some, nausea. 

As people from a Christian university would do and as waves hit the transport’s outsides and splashed inside, we sang. Led by Dr. Arabat, there were the words of “Tukutendereze Yesu” as well as the UCU theme song, “To God be the Glory” and other melodies of Zion.

It seemed we were on a trek to a foreign land. Our heavenly home seemed nearer than before. Jonah’s biblical account of every guy in the boat praying to his own god seemed more real, except that in our case, unlike Jonah, we had no hope of a Nile perch spitting us out.

Responses among passengers were both varied and similar. As faith followers, thoughts went to empathy for the Lord’s disciples seeing Jesus sleep through such sea turmoil as did a baby among us on this 2024 journey. 

“Service learning is very essential in our training,” Dr. Arabat, a seasoned medical professional said. “Taking our students to remote areas like this one is of value to our students to help those who have been urban all their lives appreciate the need within our communities. We believe this helps them nurture compassion later after graduation. “   

I am a mobilizer experienced in Human Resource practice.  But no human in this boat seemed either resourced, or emotionally mobilized enough for what we were facing. At that, some, like my neighbor enroute, could still afford a nap.

I had spent a better part of my life familiar with facing discouraged employees, not sailors, so I may have been ready for a pounding boss all my office days, but not a pounding wave.  What seemed like an ordinary day quickly turned out dramatic, as engine failure rounded up the early drama at mid-lake when no mainland was in sight. 

One of our rowers looked so baffled and clueless, too, to which someone in the boat remarked “He must be an intern.” I am not sure we laughed as well at that joke as we should have. Alas, does anybody banter when the smell of uncertainty is near?

To be precise, it was 2.5 hours later that we had an island in view.  You could almost hear the loud sighs, arriving around 4:30 p.m. By sheer grace, we touched land feeling weary, beaten, hungry and emotionally spent.

I wondered: Must fixing teeth be this hard?

Initially, we were to have stayed at the remarkable Ngamba island, (renowned for its chimpanzee tourism) but it was flooded, which meant we eventually had to  be booked at Walindi Point, another island about 20 minutes away from the service area and by antiquated boat transport.

The first night on the day we arrived at Walindi point, we were exhausted. We crashed but were awakened by a fierce storm that raged and shook our cabins from Midnight to 3 a.m. Preceded by another boat trip, Koome was waiting for us the next day. 

By 7 a.m., my group and our captain, Geoffrey, were enroute to Koome, where dentistry students had spent the night and  were already receiving patients – the start of helping roughly 400 men, women and children with cavities, gum diseases and tumors during four days.  For ongoing wellness practices, toothpaste and toothbrushes, compliments of Henry-Schein dental supplies, were left behind. 

The service there as well as in Mukono was sponsored by the UCU Directorate of Research Partnership and Innovation in collaboration with Uganda Partners, Koome Sub-county Local government and the Uganda Wildlife Conservation and Education Centre (UWEC).

Part of my role, arranged by Uganda Partners, was to support the person recording demographic information. As with many low-income populations, the number of teenage mothers was high, with one particular embedded in my memory.  The young woman arrived with her two children, seething with tooth pain and in need of fillings and extractions. I wondered what would have happened if we hadn’t come.

Such is the dire plight of many Koome Island residents that have never seen a dentist.  Every mission UCU undertakes on this island is a healing affair, for such who never get a chance to have teeth checked, let alone use a toothbrush.  

Would we go again?  

“Yes,” Dr. Arabat readily responded. “We would appreciate any support to keep the light shining. We believe this as an entry for other university programmes to improve the livelihoods of the island communities.”

Will I go again?  Yes, for the same reasons.

Medical outreach provides dental relief to rural Ugandan community

How can medical practitioners better serve a transportation and economically challenged community that travels close to 50 kilometers (31 miles) to seek dental services? 

That is one question that has been bothering the faculty at the Uganda Christian University (UCU) School of Dentistry (SoD). To get the answers, the faculty partnered with the Christian Medical and Dental Association (CMDA) of the United States, Reach Unreached Needs (RUN) Foundation and the Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) to extend a health camp to the community at Kasiso village in the central Uganda district of Luweero.

The camp, conducted on February 8, was composed of a team of dental specialists, as well as UCU Bachelor of Dental Surgery students who are currently conducting clinical practice as part of their degree course requirement. The specialists offered free dental services like fillings, teeth cleaning, restorations, extractions and surgeries.

“Today, they brought in a child who had undergone tooth extraction at the main hospital in Kasana,” said Joseph Lubowa Ddiba, the coordinator of Village Health Team (VHT) members in Luweero district. “Unfortunately, the child’s wound became septic. He is one of the people who have received treatment here.” 

VHTs is a group of laypeople hired by the Ugandan government to empower people in their communities to take part in making decisions that affect their health. 

Dr. Brian Rushaju, a dentist and the director of the RUN Foundation, said they found many cases of tooth decay among the people. Others had swellings and tumors, something he noted is an indication that many people in the community do not have access to dental services. 

The nearest health facility which provides dental services is Kasana Hospital. To visit the health facility, Ddiba said one needs sh30,000 (about $8) for transport for a return journey. And many of them cannot afford that.

 “For someone who cannot even afford transport to the hospital, how can they pay for medical care?” Ddiba asked rhetorically, indicating that many community members treated the camp as a godsend opportunity.  

Juliet Seruyange, a resident of Kasiso village, said she received a comprehensive dental examination at the outreach. A thorough cleaning and washing of her teeth, she said, made a big difference between how she arrived for the camp and how she left. 

Dr. David Ciesla, the coordinator of HVO and a pediatric dentistry professor at the Oklahoma University in the United States, said many of the people he attended to had cavity issues. 

“What I see here is the need for providers and a combination of lack of health education,” Ciesla said, noting the need for extra training for not only the workforce, but also the patients.

 

 

Dr Arabat Kasangaki, a lecturer from the UCU SoD, said where they discovered that some of the teeth were irredeemable, they extracted them or proposed to the patients to go to the UCU School of Dentistry, where he runs a dental clinic for fourth year and fifth year SoD students. Kasangaki said at their clinic, they have dentures for those who don’t have teeth and that they can fabricate sets of teeth for people to improve their life. 

Dr. Bill Griffin, the dental director at CMDA, said at such outreach activities, he also takes the advantage to mentor UCU dental students. He noted that he has been conducting online monthly mentorship lectures for the SoD students. 

Esther Masaba, Mark Wesonga and Maria Kabogozza – some of the UCU fifth-year SoD students who were part of the people in the camp – said they completed pediatric fillings, cleanings and examinations, noting that the exercise gave them opportunity to obtain more hands-on experience. 

Griffin is currently collaborating with the faculty at the UCU SoD and specialists like Ciesla to develop a residency program that will include at least a year of learning about issues such as dental implants and sedation.

Eritrean emerged as the best performing student at UCU

Yohana Eyob Ghebrekristos always held the notion that her dream would not become a reality through magic, but rather, by sweat, determination and hard work. She has had dreams of a career in dental surgery. 

She is one of nine pioneer students of Bachelor of Dental Surgery at Uganda Christian University (UCU) where she emerged as the overall best student out of 1,006 students at the previous graduation. She had a CGPA of 4.71 of 5.0.

Yohana began university studies from her home country, Eritrea. However, due to some difficulties at her university in 2018, she traveled more than 1,000 miles to relocate to Uganda to cement her dream.

“I studied at the Orotta School of Medicine and Dentistry for a couple of years, but due to some challenges that our school was going through, I decided to relocate to Uganda to continue with my studies,” Yohana said.

Since arriving in Uganda in 2018, Yohana considered herself fortunate to be admitted at UCU. She shared that she has enjoyed the privilege of being taught by highly trained professionals at UCU.

“I’m so excited and extremely honored to be the best performing student,” Yohana said. “UCU has been amazing, and I was very fortunate to join this esteemed institution. Its reputation of producing well-rounded professionals really attracted me to UCU.”

She appreciates the university for equipping her with both academic knowledge and spiritual values that she believes will guide her as she ventures into the working world. Yohana says UCU has also provided an opportunity for her to grow in her faith. 

As a dentist, Yohana notes that it is her role to identify a gap in relation to oral health literacy in the community and then use every opportunity to educate the community about oral hygiene, noting that scholars have affirmed that good oral health leads to good general health.

Looking ahead, Yohana aspires to specialize in orthodontics and dental surgery, with hope of opening up a dental clinic to serve underprivileged communities.

To her fellow students in the medical field, Yohana offered valuable advice, emphasizing that the medical profession requires unwavering hard work, determination, and sacrifice.

“Don’t underestimate the course; it’s a journey that demands your best effort. And in the end, the rewards will be worth it,” she urged.

As Yohana eagerly awaits her internship, her father, Eyob Ghebrekristos, expressed immeasurable joy and excitement upon her accomplishment.

“We are so excited and proud of Yohana, and we all came from the United States to be here and celebrate Yohana’s graduation,” he said.

He believes this was possible because of Yohana’s nature of hard work and discipline together with support from the family.

“Watching your peers graduate in their third year while you still have two more to go is hard,” Hilda Diana Ayikoru said. This is what Ayikoru had to contend with at Uganda Christian University (UCU) for two years as she completed her five-year course while those who were pursuing three-year courses walked out of the university with degrees.

But that was not the only challenge she faced while a student at UCU. The 24-year-old said she barely had any holiday time since medical students were constantly studying. As a result, she said she had to forgo many plans with her family and friends. 

“That’s what makes me more excited that this day has come,” the 24-year-old said during an interview with Uganda Partners a few hours to her graduation at UCU on July 28 as she repeatedly said “finally” she was done with the course. She is not just a graduate with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery, but also is part of the nine members of the pioneer class of the course at UCU. They were among the 1,006 students who graduated on July 28. On the day, the university also graduated 45 pioneer students in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

“It was a long and tough journey,” said Ayikoru, adding: “I have learned a lot, and I am a different person now from when I first joined university.”

“I always wanted to be a doctor because doctors bring so much change into the world,” said Ayikoru, who was once a class leader at the university. Her love for the career started in her childhood as she often visited the hospital where her parents worked.

When UCU announced it would be starting a course in dental surgery in 2018, Ayikoru says she was one of the people excited about the development because of the university’s good academic and Christian reputation.

“The kind of course units we study, such as Christian Ethics and World Views, helped paint a picture of how best my dental sensitization dream will work,” she said in an earlier interview in 2021, noting that some of her friends in other institutions envied her especially when it came to the student-lecturer relationship for my course. “UCU lecturers know their students individually.”

While in school, Ayikoru also started a crocheting business in order to get money for her upkeep. She would crochet balls, wool or yarn into clothes for sale. When she discovered that the business was a promising one, she convinced two other students – one in the UCU School of Medicine and the other at the UCU School of Business – to join her. Most of her crocheting work was done late in the night, when she completed reading. She hopes to continue with the business of crocheting even as she joins the world of dental work.

For now, Ayikoru will undergo a mandatory one-year internship in a Uganda government health facility before she is able to practice her profession in a country with slightly over 300 dentists for a population of over 45 million people. After gaining more work experience, Ayikoru plans to enroll for a master’s course in the same field, before plunging into private practice. 

The last born of four children attended Kirinya Parents School, St. Joseph’s Girls School Nsambya for O’level and Gayaza High School for A’level before joining UCU.

“Seeing people with admirable smiles makes me smile,” said Andinda Jordan, a fresh graduate from the Uganda Christian University (UCU) School of Dentistry. That means for Andinda to keep smiling, he has to ensure people retain and obtain straight, white teeth that are evenly spaced and proportionate to the rest of the face.

Some of the things that now await Andinda as a practitioner is teaching people about the importance of teeth and oral hygiene, and re-aligning people’s maligned teeth so that they can get the “admirable smiles.”

Andinda was among the nine students who graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at UCU’s 24th graduation ceremony held at the main campus in Mukono on July 28, 2023. A total of 1,006 students graduated with degrees, diplomas and certificates at the ceremony.

Andinda describes his journey through the UCU School of Dentistry (SoD) as bitter-sweet.

 “The course has many units to cover in quite a short period of time,” he says, indicating the level of sacrifice that any student desirous of pursuing a course in dental surgery has to commit. Andinda and his eight colleague-fresh-graduates in dental surgery were the UCU pioneer class of Bachelor of Dental Surgery that enrolled in 2018.

Despite challenges of suspension of education in Uganda at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the students completed their course on schedule. The time during the Covid pandemic was primarily used to cover the theory and then post-covid, the practicality of the course commenced. Dentistry is a practical course which involves meeting people and touching them. 

The nine graduates are now expected to join a workforce in Uganda where there are about 300 dental surgeons in active practice, covering only 21% of the country. One dentist in Uganda serves about 142,000 people, a ratio dangerously unbalanced, considering the World Health Organization requirement of dentist to patient ratio of 1:8,000.

Andinda said because of the low number of students for the course at UCU, they were able to get undivided attention from their lecturers and faculty mentors for the five-year duration of the course.  It is for that reason, Andinda noted, that many students have been able to identify mentors among their lecturers. Also, at UCU, students have a well-equipped dental clinic, where they are able to practice under the supervision of a doctor.

“My current mentor, Dr. Catherine Kabenge, is from the UCU dental school; she has shared her career journey and taught me some of the important principles to live by as a dentist,” says Andinda, the first born of six children of Uganda’s High Court Judge Justice Jesse Byaruhanga and Mrs. Betty Byaruhanga.

The other faculty members are seasoned dentists who students would like to emulate. For instance, some of the members of the faculty, such as the Dean of the SoD, Dr. James Magara, practice in the profession. They are, therefore, the most appropriate human resource to impart knowledge since they offer it in the context of the real world of work. Dr. Magara was part of Makerere University’s pioneer class of dental surgery students that graduated in 1988. 

During an interview that Dr. Magara granted Uganda Partners in 2020, he said UCU is committed to ensuring that students have good exposure to modern dentistry.

“The UCU Faculty of Dentistry’s teaching hospital has a very long history of teaching medical practitioners in Uganda,” he said. “The university has a partnership with Mengo Hospital, which has a dental unit that has been running for over 40 years now; this unit has trained dentists with internships throughout Uganda,”

Dr. Magara added that the hospital location is “recognized as the premium place to go for hands-on dental studies,”  and the main reason any student wishing to pursue the course should look no further than UCU.

Eritrean narrates journey as UCU dentistry student

Yohana Eyob Ghebrekristos always held the notion that her dream would not become a reality through magic, but rather, by sweat, determination and hard work. Yohana dreams of a career in dental surgery. And she is almost there. She is in year five, the final year of study for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery at Uganda Christian University (UCU). 

Yohana began university studies from her home country, Eritrea. However, due to some difficulties at her university, in 2018, she traveled more than 1,000 miles to relocate to Uganda to cement her dream.

“I studied at the Orotta School of Medicine and Dentistry for a couple of years, but due to some challenges that our school was going through, I decided to relocate to Uganda to continue with my studies,” Yohana said.

She was among the pioneer students for the Bachelor of Dental Surgery course at UCU. With that UCU pioneer class expected to graduate in July this year, there is hope that the high dentist to patient ratio in Uganda will drop. Uganda has 320 dentists licensed to practice in a country of more than 45 million people, resulting in a shortage that the Uganda Dental Association attributes to limited training institutions.

While many people would have second thoughts about leaving their country of origin to study on foreign land, it was not the case with Yohana. The passion and determination she had to pursue a career in dentistry, coupled with the comfort of living with her sister, who is employed as an information technology professional with the United Nations in Uganda drove her to UCU. 

“My passion for dentistry started when I was 13 years old. During that time, I used to visit my childhood dentist, Dr. Fessehaye, to restore the cavities that I had in my teeth,” she said, noting that the level of professionalism with which Dr. Fessehaye carried out his work attracted her. Another thing that made Yohana fall for dentistry, she narrated, was the rate at which patients regained hope after visiting the dentist. 

Yohana notes that when she developed the love for the profession, she started engaging with the dentist, who was also a family friend, more often, to try to understand what it meant to carry out the job. 

“He would tell me what’s required to become a dentist. When I finally shared with him my desire to join the profession, he gave me invaluable advice that made me appreciate the career even more,” Yohana said, noting that she has since learned that dentistry involves more than just extracting teeth.

Yohana said she is glad she joined UCU School of Dentistry, because she is not just taught by lecturers but “dental experts with good character.” For instance, the Dean of the UCU School of Dentistry, Dr. James Magara, is one of Uganda’s celebrated dental surgeons. Dr. Magara, who was part of the pioneer class of dental surgery at Uganda’s Makerere University, has been a practicing professional since 1988.

Yohana says UCU has also provided an opportunity for her to grow in her faith. She and, indeed, other students, credit UCU for its strong Christian foundation that they say reinforces their religious beliefs. One of the favorite programs is the lunch-hour Christian fellowship that is conducted at the university every Tuesday and Thursday.

As a dentist, Yohana notes that it is her role to identify a gap in relation to oral health literacy in the community and then use every opportunity to educate the community about oral hygiene, noting that scholars have affirmed that good oral health leads to good general health.

UCU holds first physical pre-entry exams since COVID

Uganda Christian University (UCU) has held its first physical pre-entry examinations for applicants wishing to pursue three of the courses it offers at the undergraduate level. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, for the past three years, UCU has conducted virtual pre-entry exams for the Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, and Bachelor of Dental Surgery. 

The examinations for the School of Medicine and that of Surgery were conducted from April 10-14 at the UCU School of Dentistry in Mengo, Kampala, while the students intending to pursue a course in law sat their examinations at the UCU Main Campus, in the Janani Luwum Dining Hall from April 17-21.

UCU’s pre-entry examinations consist of both oral and written tests. The written examination is intended to test the candidate’s level of comprehension while the oral test is done to evaluate the confidence levels and the oratory skills of candidates.

Ninsima Dorothy, one of the students who sat the pre-entry examinations for the admission into the Bachelor of Laws, said the oral interviews give UCU an edge over other law schools. She reasoned that students who are not as effective in written presentations also have the option of the oral interviews to make their case. Ninsima wants to follow in the footsteps of her sister who also pursued a Bachelor of Laws at UCU and “performed quite well.”

Kamya Joel Jessy also sat the pre-entry exams for the admission into the Bachelor of Laws course. The former student of St Julian High School Gayaza, near Kampala, lauded UCU for setting a “feasible and practical” test which “fitted well in his level of understanding.”

“They asked for my take on divorce, marriage and foreign aid,” he explained, noting that the questions were mainly testing one’s level of general knowledge and current affairs. 

Speaking to the applicants before they wrote the tests, Dr. Mutesasira Davis, the Dean of the UCU School of Law, informed them that it is not necessary for one to be coached before they sit the pre-entry exams as he allayed any fears the students could have had, especially those who had not had any form of coaching. 

Asaph Elly Munyigwa, the president of the UCU Law Society, noted that in pre-entry examinations, candidates are asked about what’s happening in their societies. “You cannot desire to pursue a Bachelor of Laws course if you don’t even know who the current Chief Justice of Uganda is,” he warned.

Munyigwa said for the written exam, the candidates were given one-and-a-half hours to take the test, which consisted of questions with multiple choice answers. “There were 30 in number and each question carried two marks.” 

Munyigwa said more than 800 students turned up for the pre-entry examinations, and that 150-200 of them were examined every day. 

According to Munyigwa, the good performance of UCU alumni in the recently released examination results for the Bar Course at Uganda’s Law Development Centre for the academic year 2021/22 attracted more students to express their desire to join the School of Law. 

The Law Development Centre offers a contemporary Post-Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, which is the Bar Course, and its acquisition is mandatory before anyone practices law in the country. 

In the most recent results of the Bar Course, of the 20 First Class graduates, nine, including the top four, are UCU alums. UCU alum Emmanuel Okia emerged the overall best student with a grade point average of 4.90 out of 5.0. Other UCU alums Shamira Kitimbo garnered 4.80, Reagan Ahumuza got 4.75 while Jemimah Jehopio scored 4.70.

Addressing the students who sat the pre-entry exams for the Bachelor of Laws course, Christa Oluka, the UCU Director of Director of Admissions and Student Records, said the university has a special law school where the staff and the students are always engaging each other.  

Mukibi Lawrence William, the student leader at the UCU Medical School, said more than 320 students sat for the UCU School of Medicine and dentistry pre-entry exams. However, only 68 were selected for both courses, with Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery taking 50 of those chosen.

Ayero Claire Nono, a former student of Uganda Martrys Namugongo, near Kampala, passed the pre-entry exams. She said she enjoyed the oral part of the exams because it offered her an opportunity to physically interact with the panel. She said now that she has joined the university, she looks forward to qualifying as a doctor with a foundation anchored on Christian values.

Like father, like son: Two Magaras at UCU’s School of Dentistry

Uganda Christian University’s (UCU) Dean of the School of Dentistry (SoD),  James Magara, was among the 10 pioneer students getting a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at Makerere University in 1988. Thirty years later, in 2018, Magara’s son, David Magara, was among the pioneer students of UCU’s Bachelor of Dental Surgery program. 

One might think David was always attracted to the course because he saw his father practice the profession. 

But that’s not the case.

In fact, after David’s final examinations to qualify for university admission, he says he was conflicted about a career.. He was passionate about arts and had a love for music, but also was obsessed with sciences. Despite making up his mind to study dental surgery in 2015, David found himself at a crossroads when it was time to enroll in a university. Subsequently, he took a gap year to rediscover himself.

During that year, he worked at his father’s dental clinic – Jubilee Dental Limited – as a receptionist. It was during that time at the dental clinic that David got the affirmation that that was the profession for him. 

“While at the dental facility, I observed how the dentists enjoyed their work, and also had time to pursue their other passions,” he said. “I found that balance quite attractive, and it is what first interested me in the course.” 

David says after prayer and fasting about his future, he felt a strong peace about going into that field.

That same year, UCU was making arrangements to start a Bachelor of Dental Surgery

course, which gave David the opportunity to also be a pioneer student in the course. 

He says humility, confidence, great listening and communication skills are some of the attributes that a dentist should have.

“Having seen my father practice dentistry for many years, I am confident to say he embodies each of these principles,” David says. Possibly these are some of the reasons UCU considered as they courted James Magara in 2020, to convince him to return to training Uganda’s next generation of dental surgeons. 

The SoD dean had left university teaching in 2007.

David says he has had the rare opportunity of learning from celebrated practitioners in Uganda, such as Dr. Arabat Kasangaki, who is one of his lecturers at UCU; Dr. Aisha Sekalala, an experienced orthodontist; Dr Francis Ochieng, a  dental practitioner; and Dr. Nevis Nagirembabazi, a clinician of dental surgery.

According to David, his former school, Vine International Christian Academy, prepared him well for the kind of experience that he has had at the School of Dentistry. At Vine International Christian Academy, David says he learned how to set daily, weekly, and long-term goals on a regular basis, something that has helped him to keep focused in school. 

He promotes oral hygiene awareness, and its impact on the overall health of a person. While good oral hygiene is believed to benefit the teeth and gums, its benefits extend to the rest of the body as well. 

David believes that because of poor oral health among the people, periodontal diseases which are a major source of tooth decay continue to be part of the pressing health issues in the country.

Oftentimes, dental surgeons in Uganda have decried the increase in cases of dental health issues, with research showing that 90% of the country’s population of about 45 million need dental attention. 

However, with the less than 300 dental surgeons who are in active practice in Uganda, covering only 29 districts (21% of the country), the possibility of the surgeons reaching all the people who need their services, for now, remains a distant dream. 

When David and his cohorts join the workforce soon, it is hoped that such statistics will, in time, improve and that even the poor in the rural areas who need the services of a dental surgeon will eventually get access to one.

The career journey of Uganda Christian University (UCU) School of Dentistry student Peter Kabuye started out with bumps. In 2018, Kabuye was staring at a bleak future after missing out on studying dentistry at Makerere University, which he thought was the only institution with the program. 

“When I was informed by one colleague of mine about UCU’s plan to start a School of Dentistry, I was extremely positive and happy that I was finally going to pursue a Bachelor of Dental Surgery,” Kabuye says.

UCU started the course in August 2018 to fill the gap of dentists in Uganda. Uganda Dental Association estimates that the country has only about 320 dentists licensed to practice in a population of over 45 million – that is a ratio of one dental surgeon for 146,000 people. The recommended dentist-population ratio should be 1:7,500, according to the World Health Organisation. 

Kabuye says he ventured into dentistry because he wants to be an agent of change and influence in the oral health care sector globally. He is passionate about promoting oral health and preventing oral diseases in his community.

“There is still much to do in regards to promoting oral health,” he says. “I feel I am destined for greatness and I am inspired by Dr. Martin Aliker, to start up my own dental clinic,”. Dr Aliker is distinguished among Uganda’s first dental surgeons and with the first black-owned private dental practice in East Africa.

Kabuye is full of praises for the teaching staff of professional doctors that strive to impart medical professionalism at the school. “Dentistry being one of the most expensive programs, I dearly appreciate UCU for providing the clinic, equipment and meeting all the requirements needed to enhance our learning,” Kabuye says.

Students have a fully-fledged dental clinic where they are able to practice under the supervision of a doctor. “I am so grateful to UCU for its competent and good dental team which gives us skills of the practice that any student would want,” he adds.

It is a blessing to study at UCU because it teaches a complete education that includes spirituality. The staff and students gather for special worship for an hour, twice every week. Kabuye acknowledges that such fellowships have improved his spiritual life as a Christian.

“Every community worship session is a platform for learning. There’s always something to learn – for instance, when they preached about addiction and sexuality, I had a lot to learn during the session,” he recalls. 

He says he has learned to be patient and honest, traits that have enabled him to handle patients properly.

Kabuye believes that one needs God in order to be a good dental surgeon. He explains that as dentists, they not only talk to their patients about the physical wellbeing, but also about their spiritual life.

 “Some things are beyond human understanding, and one just needs God,” he quips.

Now, in his final semester of the five-year course, Kabuye is fully motivated to be a dental surgeon that goes beyond making money, to one who serves humanity. He has pledged to sensitize communities about oral health education, especially to the vulnerable through dental outreaches.

Kabuye is a man on a mission inspired by the vision to “see patients leave with a smile on their faces” after attending to them. He will graduate this July a proud first UCU alumnus of the school of dentistry, who saw it blossom from a department under the school of medicine on its inception to morphing into a school in 2021.

Equipment informs future doctors about evidence-based patient care

Within five minutes of the first time that Vanessa Kyalimpa and I met Dr. Gerald Tumusiime, he was casually lifting and touching cleaned bones extracted from donated cadavers. Vanessa, a student in the Uganda Christian University (UCU) School of Journalism, Media and Communication, captured photographs while I took notes. 

I wondered why this rubber-gloved dean for the UCU School of Medicine (SoM) was so attentive to the skeletal part of the human body.

Later, I got my answer. I discovered Dr. Tumusiime’s two bone-related pieces of  research – both within the last year and concentrated on femur (thigh) bones of East African men.  In brief and not doing justice to the studies by the esteemed doctor, senior lecturer and dean, I summarized his research on the 333 African men were about:

  • External opening of femur bones to make a correlation between whether the opening that enables blood flow necessary for healing after surgery is inherited or acquired (International Journal of Anatomy and Research, India); and 
  • Size and shape of femur bones as this relates to assessing fracture risk and stability of hip joints and design of implants for hip replacement (Austin, Texas, Journal of Anatomy). 

Whether serving in his role as researcher, teacher or practicing doctor, Dr. Tumusiime epitomizes excellence in the field of medicine. His passion for lifelong learning and elevating UCU SoM student knowledge and skill were clear on April 5, 2022, as he showed us around with a focus on how equipment informs evidence-based patient care.  Much of what we saw in three different buildings, including where the UCU School of Dentistry (SoD) is housed, was donated a year ago by MedShare  and Midmark through the non-profit Uganda Partners organization.

“Biomedical equipment promotes holistic and evidence-based patient care,” Dr. Tumusiime said. “While we teach that patient history and physical exams contribute over 80% to an accurate diagnostic, the equipment donated through the United States in 2021 is extremely valuable in shaping our future doctors into evidence-based, health care practitioners.”

The donated equipment and consumables contributed to the accreditation and licensure of UCU’s SoM and SoD by the Ugandan regulators, as well as the continuity of teaching and learning during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The equipment boosted the schools’ ability to be accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education. Such tools supplement learning in the UCU biomedical laboratories in gross anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, histology and microbiology and immunology. 

The UCU equipment for the SoM, mostly donated in the past two years, and brief descriptions include:

  • Microscopes (providing the “Gold standard” for tissue diagnosis) – Magnify what the human eye can’t see, such as cells indicating diseases, such as sickle cell
  • Centrifuge – Separate, purify and isolate cells, proteins and viruses for further observation
  • Vortex mixer – Combine vials of liquid to study enzymes and DNA
  • Incubator – Maintain temperature, humidity and gas content to grow or maintain cells
  • Bunsen burner – Used for heating samples and sterilization
  • Safety cabinets – Protect researchers and others from potentially infectious materials
  • Medical waste bins – Add safety from biomedical waste and sharp instruments
  • Medical refrigerator and freezer – Protect and extend shelf life of bio-specimens,  reagents, drugs and vaccines
  • Protective gear (aprons, face masks, face shields, goggles, gloves) – Support safety in teaching and learning, research and patient care 
  • Assorted clinical diagnostic equipment – Promote the quality of patient diagnosis and research

The SoM Dean expressed appreciation for the donations that, despite a year of Covid-related distance learning, have boosted the holistic, evidence-based capabilities of UCU’s 230 students in the SoM and SoD as each completes a five-year program. 

“There are many examples of how technology equips us to improve Uganda’s health care,” Dr. Tumusiime said. “For instance, in dealing with malnutrition among children, we are able to help by analyzing blood samples to guide nutritional interventions and monitor progress. In all age groups, we screen and diagnose non-communicable diseases like sickle cell anaemia, cardiovascular diseases, cancers and metabolic disorders that are currently on the rise in Africa.” 

Dr. Tumusiime said that the need for more laboratory tools is ongoing, and singled out the equipment that is urgently needed to enhance teaching and learning, research and community service. In 2022, these necessities and their roles are:

  • Biological teaching microscope – Enables the instructor to demonstrate to the learners in real time
  • Hematology analyzers – Allow study of blood disorders and expanded understanding of human immune response
  • Chemistry analyzers – Enable testing of 100 different components, including urine for detection of various infections, kidney disease and diabetes
  • Blood gas/electrolyte analyzer – Measure blood sample parameters, such as oxygen concentration

“I appreciate that in a resource-limited setting, some of these equipment may not be readily available,” he said. “But it’s critical to the profession that they know they exist and know how to use them.”

Post-lockdown UCU dentistry: Moving forward to fill the gap

That ache in your tooth can cause a pain in your belly. To be more precise, oral bacteria weakens the stomach’s ability to fight infection and could result in inflammatory bowel disease.  Vice versa, gastrointestinal issues can yield gum sores.

The human body is one package, according to Dr. Arabat Kasangaki, a dentist and lecturer with the Uganda Christian University (UCU) School of Dentistry. He explains this more than once each day to students and patients at the Mengo Hospital, Kampala, location. On this day, April 5, and seated at left with year-four student Diana Hilda Ayikoru and a male patient to his right, he reinforced the importance of using the proper words – explaining well and sensitively.

“If you only chew on one side of  the mouth, chances are the food is not breaking down properly,” Arabat said in response to the male patient’s assertion that he has learned to live with discomfort. “It will not get better on its own.”

After an X-ray, it was determined the patient needed a root canal, a procedure where the infected pulp is removed to save the tooth.

Ayikoru, slated to finish UCU’s five-year dentistry program in 18 months, already knows that the teeth incisors and canines cut and tear food and that molars crush and grind. But as monotonous as that is for a dentist or dentistry student, the patient needs the education to understand, approve and trust.

“A good dentist serves and teaches to convince the patient to let us help do the right thing,” Arabat said. “The way God created us, we run when we feel pain.”

Uganda has 320 dentists licensed to practice in the country with more than 45 million residents, resulting in shortage that the Uganda Dental Association (UDA) attributes to limited training institutions. UCU is working to fill that gap – progress stymied with the Covid lockdown.

The UCU School of Dentistry has 29 students. The dentistry school has the same number of  “pioneer” students – nine – it started with in 2018, but the later classes declined.  The third-year class has seven. The second-year class numbers eight. Only five new students enrolled in the current, first year. For the first two years, much of the curriculum for School of Medicine and School of Dentistry is the same, with students in the same classes.

“Dentistry has always been less attractive in our country than medicine, even though the skill sets are much the same,” Arabat said. “Our numbers took a greater hit during the pandemic shift to no learning and then on-line learning that was new to most students and many faculty.”

Dr. James Magara, the SoM dean with a prestigious dentistry practice in Kampala, knows the global virus impact from the education, economic and service side of his profession.

“In normal times, wellness is difficult to reinforce here,” he said. “During the height of the pandemic when many were not earning money, it was even harder for us to send the message that regular dental checkups would help prevent emergencies like severe tooth pain from happening…and even harder to recruit students into a career where you are in close proximity to the disease-spreading mouth.”

Peter Kabuye, a pioneer student of UCU School of Dentistry that was launched in 2018, described the challenges faced during the two on-line semesters because of two Covid-related, government-ordered lockdowns.

“There are times when Moodle platform was unreliable, so we had to resort to platforms such as Zoom and Google Meets to have real time lectures,” he said.  Additionally, not all resources on the UCU Moodle platform were free. For dental, as well as medical students, “we had to dig deeper into our pockets” to pay sh3,000 (85 cents) to sh5,000 ($1.40) each to access real-time lectures, he said.

Despite all the challenges, there was no option, but to persevere to reach his goal of being a dentist. Tuition from an American friend and the mentorship of both Dr. Ken Chapman, an American and Ugandan dentist who serves as a lecturer at the UCU school of dentistry and director at the Mengo Dental Clinic; and Dr. Martin Aliker, retired dentist, have sustained Peter.

“I’ve always wanted to be a dentist since I was very young,” he said. Since age four, his parents’ medical insurance privileges allowed him more than two dozen visits to a dentist to learn and reap rewards of good oral health.

Additionally, Peter’s family has high hopes for him after  graduation in 2023. These expectations are premised on the fact that he was privileged to have attended good schools and is the first born of three siblings, leaving “no room for failure.”

Like most School of Dentistry and School of Medicine students and faculty, he returned in January to in-person training with Covid-19 vaccination status and wears a mask as usual. Patients do not have those requirements.

The return found equipment donations through Midmark and the Uganda Partners. These include sterilizers, a suction machine, compressors and work stations with chairs, as well as a simulated lab with computers.

In his early 60s and maneuvering around outside debris to share the location of the suction equipment in a room visible 30 feet from the patient treatment room, Arabat is on a mission to educate students to the greatest extent possible. Despite the Covid learning hurdles, Arabat is keenly aware, he says, that his work and his mission to play a role in yielding quality dentists are “directed by God” and that accomplishments are to His glory.

The Most Rt. Rev. Dr. Samuel Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda and Chancellor of Uganda Christian University (UCU), on Thursday, October 21, 2021, commissioned medical equipment donated to the UCU School of Dentistry (SoD) by MidMark.

The commissioning served as an act of appreciation and official acknowledgement of use. More significant, perhaps, is that this ceremony signified that the SoD has overcome the threat of being closed down by regulators who in 2020 cited the facility for inappropriate infrastructure. The SoD’s new state-of-the-art equipment elevates the training facility, enabling it to nurture all-round dentists.

In his remarks, Kaziimba expressed gratitude to the management of Mengo Hospital for accepting to house the University’s School of Dentistry. He called for respect towards the dentistry profession, saying whereas dentists do a great job in keeping teeth healthy, in Uganda, dentists are not as respected as other medical professionals and are even sometimes given demeaning nicknames.

At the event, UCU’s Vice Chancellor, Assoc. Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi, said more than $700,000 (over sh2.5b) had been injected into setting up the modern facility. Mushengyezi said the regulator, the National Medical and Dental Practitioner’s Board, recently inspected and declared the school capable of training dental professionals.

Mushengyezi also commended MidMark for donating equipment worth sh1.46b ($397,855)  through UCU Partners, a US-based non-profit charitable organization that raises public awareness about UCU in the United States by seeking material and spiritual support for students through sponsorships.

Kaziimba unveiled the equipment donated by Midmak during the event. The equipment includes dental chairs, LED dental lights, a separator tank assembly, powervac P7 base, powerair oil-less compressors and a Midmark M3 Steam Sterilizer.

“Dental equipment is very expensive, and so to be able to have five dental units, that is a very great boost for us as a School,” says Dr. James Magara, Dean, UCU’s SoD. “We are grateful to Midmark for a very generous donation that they gave to us, which is setting us on our way to begin training students in the clinical practice of dentistry.”

UCU SoD not only trains native students, but also those from other countries around the continent. The equipment arranged through the Uganda Partners NGO and coming from North America was long awaited when it arrived over the summer. Hence, Dr. Magara believes “the impact of the [Midmark] donation is going to be felt throughout Africa.” 

David Magara (not related to the dean), a fourth-year student of Bachelor of Dental Surgery, said: “This technology makes us unique, compared to students in other institutions, given that we will be equipped with the necessary skills to meet the demand of the international market.” 

The UCU School of Dentistry started in 2018 as a department under the School of Medicine. In 2020, the department morphed into a school of its own. The school currently offers the Bachelor of Dental Surgery, with 24 students and 10 staff members.

The Uganda Christian University has announced a change of the guard within its faculties and departments. 

The announcement was made by the university’s Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Rev. Dr. John Kitayimbwa, during the farewell for some of the outgoing leaders and the unveiling of the new guard. The ceremony took place on May 10 in the Learning Commons Room, located at the Hamu Mukasa University Library.

 “Covid-19 has shifted the demands,” UCU Vice Chancellor Associate Professor Aaron Mushengyezi said as he urged the new leaders to be creative in their work. “And so, as we come in to lead, please take note, you are not going to lead with the ordinary tools your predecessors have led with. You will require new tools because wholly duplicating what your predecessors did, may not work.”

Due to the “new normal” presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, Mushengyezi said all programs will have a digital equivalent. 

“Covid-19 has changed the academic landscape,” he said. “And so, one of the main tasks for you is to pioneer and continue to consolidate e-learning.”

The university’s council chairperson, the Rt. Rev. Can. Prof. Alfred Olwa, congratulated the new leaders and thanked the outgoing for their dedication and hard work.

The newly appointed Head of the Department of Literature and Languages, Dr. James Tabu Busimba, was delighted by his new role at UCU. Busimba recently retired from a public university, Makerere, after clocking 60 years.

“I think serving in an institution that has one of its core values as Christ-centeredness is such a golden opportunity,” Busimba said. “I am grateful to God.”  

According to the Rev. Dr. John Kitayimbwa, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, who unveiled the new team, the UCU Statute for Appointment of deans and heads of departments mandates that the appointments are ratified by the University Senate and then submitted to the institution’s human resource board for consideration.

“To me, serving in Uganda Christian University is building the kingdom of God,” Professor Martin Lwanga, former Dean, School of Business, said. “It is a privilege, and some of us are still available to serve at this great institution.” 

Eriah Nsubuga, the Head of the Fine Arts Department, said: “It is unusual times. But an opportunity for us to reengineer how we do things. And one thing I like about UCU is that they care for their staff.” 

 “This year, we are changing direction as a university,” said Prof. Kukunda Elizabeth Bacwayo, the dean of the School of Research and Post Graduate Studies. “We shall provide a bigger amount of funding to professors, to lead various teams of researchers.”

Whenever songs of the late South African artist, Lucky Dube, are played, many music lovers in Africa strike a chord with them. One of the songs, The Hand that Giveth, makes lovers of his music go wild – not just because of the beats, but also the message in the lyrics. The message in The Hand that Giveth is derived from Acts 20:35, which says it is more blessed to give than to receive.

The most recent act by Uganda Christian University (UCU) is a replica of the message in The Hand that Giveth. The institution has shared a donation of the sh520m (about $141,488) medical equipment that it received recently from the US with three hospitals in Uganda – Mukono Church of Uganda Hospital, Mukono General Hospital and Mengo Hospital in Kampala. The three beneficiaries are UCU’s training partners for its medical and dental students.

The medical supplies and equipment was donated and transported to Uganda by MedShare, a US humanitarian organisation.

UCU’s Vice Chancellor, Assoc. Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi; the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, Mr. David Mugawe; Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics, Dr. John Kitayimbwa; and Dr. Edward Mukooza, the chairperson of the university’s health and safety committee, delivered the equipment to the hospitals.

The consignment included catheters, breast pump kits, blankets, abdominal binders, a Cook SP Tube Introducer Set, and PDB Kidney Shape Balloon. Also provided were applicators, antiseptic, swabs, Povidone Iodine 10%, cabinets, filing metal drawers, covers, face rest pad covers, disposables, thermometers, electronic probe, drapes, surgical and endoscopies.

At Mengo Hospital, UCU’s medical training school founded in 1897 by the Anglican Church, the consignment was handed over to the facility’s medical director, Dr. Rose Mutumba. Commending UCU for the gesture, she said. “UCU is walking the talk and we are excited about the fruits and the prospects of this partnership.”

At Mukono General Hospital, the donation was received by Dr. Robert Kasirye, who is in charge of the facility. Kasirye, too, expressed appreciation to UCU for the gesture. Part of the donation was delivery kits for expectant mothers. Statistics show that in Uganda, 15 women die every day from pregnancy or childbirth-related challenges. Many of the expectant mothers who die during child birth delay to reach hospitals after failing to get money to buy delivery kits, hence developing complications.

“We shall use whatever you have given us equitably to the save mothers,” Dr. Kasirye said, adding, “For long, we have had a good working relationship with UCU. The university’s program, Save the Mothers, built a shelter at this hospital, for expectant mothers. That is a plus for UCU and we shall continue working with you.” 

At Mukono Church of Uganda Hospital, the Diocesan Bishop, James Williams Sebaggala, who is the chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the hospital, received the equipment and supplies.

The prelate said he was glad to receive the donation at a time when they were looking for a Good Samaritan to donate the necessary equipment.

Assoc. Prof. Mushengyezi noted that the donations were intended to further cement the relationship between UCU and the hospitals. 

“We thought that as part of building our partnership in training students, we should support you also by providing some essential medical items that you need in your daily work, as you attend to patients,” he said. “We are here to show that we care for our friends by donating these supplies.”

Mushengyezi added that UCU’s first lot of medical and dental students who are in their third year now would soon be sent out for internships and asked the staff of the hospitals to accord them the necessary support.

One student’s dream to promote dental literacy in Africa

We may never truly get over a loss, but we can move forward and evolve from it. 

Diana Hilda Ayikoru, a third-year School of Dentisty student at Uganda Christian University (UCU), unveils a transformation story shaped by a loss in 2014. Two years after the death of her devoted, caring mother, Ayikoru realized that one must have a unique reason to live in a remarkable style that adds value to society. 

“Mother’s death opened my mind to understand that there is more to life than just a tedious routine,” she said.

Much as her mom’s death remains a sad occurrence, it unwrapped a new chapter for a daughter – one filled with bigger visions, self-determined decisions, and dental literacy. One of the big vision, independent decisions she made was a career path in dental health. Between her mom and  Dr. Aisha Bataringaya, a Ugandan orthodontist, Ayikoru felt pulled to learn more about dentistry. 

“There is more to dental health than just a daily brushing routine and plucking out of spoilt teeth like most Africans think,” she said, adding that the lack of access to dental information and facilities contributes to African dental illiteracy. Ayikoru’s dream is to promote good oral hygiene. 

 “Sometimes I look at someone’s teeth and feel something could have been done to save them by just creating awareness,” she said. “One can help improve oral health since dental complications can be bound or even handled before conditions worsen.”

Ayikoru says lack of dental awareness in Africa affects both the rich and poor.  Those with money for dental wellness and dental work often end up with complications because of inadequate equipment or untrained dentists. 

Ayikoru is glad she is studying dentistry at UCU.  In addition to a drive from the tragedy of her mother’s death, her decision to join UCU was influenced by some UCU alumni who told her that the University has great courses. 

“The kind of course units we study such as Christian Ethics and World Views have helped paint a picture of how best my dental sensitization dream will work,” she said. “Some of my friends in other institutions envy me especially when it comes to the student-lecturer relationship for my course. UCU lecturers know their students individually.” 

UCU started the School of Medicine with medicine and dentistry in 2018 to address the problem of smaller numbers of dentists and medical practitioners in Uganda. In 2020, UCU pulled dentistry out as its own faculty – School of Dentistry – to further accentuate the importance of dental health. The Ugandan government COVID-19 lockdown has slowed Ayikoru’s work toward becoming a dentist as she and eight of her classmates, who are the pioneers of dental surgery at UCU, were supposed to be doing year three practicals by now. 

Ayikoru’s peers are supportive of her aspirations. One, Rodney Wamala, describes her as a “lively, graceful and hardworking woman.”  Another, David Magara, echoes accolades, nothing that Ayikoru “is very inquisitive in class, asks excellent questions to teachers and always sits at the front.” 

“I am excited to feel the touch of dental equipment and have hands-on experience with patients in the training hospital,” Ayikoru remarks. “It’s interesting to be at the hospital and gain exposure to patients even before one can officially start work. It ignites the energy and zeal to work harder.”

“Some tortures are physical and some are mental, but the one that is both is dental.” That phrase is attributed to the late Frederic Nash, an American poet. 

Aziz Wamula, a third-year student of Mass Communication at the Uganda Christian University, relates intimately with Nash’s saying. The mental and physical torture emanating as he woke up one morning could not allow the 23-year-old any more time at home.

He went to the Uganda Christian University’s (UCU) Allan Galpin Clinic in Mukono for medical assistance. Wamula needed an urgent root canal treatment to ward off the constant pain. When he arrived at the medical facility, he hoped the pain he was undergoing would soon be dealt with. But he was wrong. The clinic did not offer the service he needed. Therefore, he was referred to Mengo Hospital, 32km (19.8 miles) away. There his woes continued as Wamula did not have the money that the hospital needed to treat him.

He, therefore, resorted to a dental facility about 5km (3 miles) from the university, in Seeta.   

“At the clinic, I neared the luck of having the root canal treatment at sh200,000 (about $54),” he recollected. The process began but before it was completed, the clinic encountered a power blackout with no backup generator. Wamula says the pain he underwent when the power was off forced him to ask the dentist to switch from his desired root canal process to extracting the tooth. For this switch, he got a refund of sh50,000 (about $13.5) and left with one less tooth. 

A deeper pocket eased the pain undergone by a fourth-year Law student at UCU, who preferred anonymity. She needed special dental treatment after her teeth got out of position. To correct the misalignment, the student needed to buy a brace and a retainer. When she inquired, she was told it would cost sh10m (about $2,700). The brace was to cost sh4m and retainer sh6m. The lawyer-to-be paid for the service, which was conducted at one of the dental facilities in Kampala. She now wears a metallic arc belting her ivory white teeth.

The amount that Okiror spent on realigning her teeth could pay her tuition fees for a full year at the university. Despite the fact that the service left her wallet dry, she is proud that her teeth are slowly getting back to their right and original alignment. 

Currently, the UCU’s Allan Galpin Clinic only offers dental extraction services within the sh70,000 ($19.02) that students pay for medical services every semester at the university.

The few students who have medical insurance are able to avoid the single option of losing a tooth and receive professional dental services. Esther Tusiime, a third-year student of journalism at UCU, is one of them. When Tusiime, like Wamula, developed a sudden excruciating pain in her gums, her mother’s health insurance bailed her out.

“The pain was so much that I had spent several sleepless nights before finally seeking medical treatment,” she recalled. Due to the COVID-19 lockdown that included school closings, Tusiime was home with her parents; they took her for specialised treatment at Mawano Dental Clinic in Kampala. 

“The dentist discovered that I had a tooth that was hidden in the gum and growing in the wrong direction, hence causing the pain,” she said of the diagnosis that included an X-ray. For the technical analysis and stitching of the gum, Tusiime paid sh600,000 (about $163) off her insurance. 

A majority of the Ugandan population, including UCU community members, do not have health insurance. This means that they may suffer with untreated dental diseases and permanent defects from bad breath to missing teeth and mouth pain. Some students narrate their experiences of having to sit next to a classmate who suffers from halitosis (bad breath).

The lack of funds to resolve dental issues is compounded with the low dentist-to-patient ratio in the country. According to the Uganda Dental Association, there is one dentist for every 142,000 Ugandans. 

Dr. James Magara, the Dean of the Faculty of the UCU School of Dentistry, said running a dental facility in Uganda is expensive because most of the equipment used and much of the sealants and fluoride are imported.

Dr. Zachariah Muddu, from the Allan Galpin Clinic, said UCU finds it fit to uproot the teeth because the standard dentist charge for the procedure, from within or without, is sh50,000 (about $13.6) – more than students can afford. Any student with the need for anything beyond extraction is directed to any of UCU’s referral hospitals. 

“When it comes to root canal-filling of the teeth, bills are picked up by the patient. Anything that involves elective measures calls for personal expenditure,” Muddu explained.

During 2020, the university created the UCU School of Dentistry and is currently equipping its training laboratories. It is hoped that this move could give birth to a dental clinic that can offer cheaper treatment services to members of the UCU community.

UCU School of Dentistry Dean addresses equipment, training challenges


Early in 2020, the East African Medical and Dental Practitioners Council communicated to Uganda Christian University (UCU) a number of requirements for continued accreditation. Creation of a School of Dentistry independent from the UCU School of Medicine was one such condition that has now been met. The University appointed Dr. James Magara, a dental practitioner since 1988, as its Dean. Some of the content for the interview with the new dean was compiled in December 2020.

What is your professional background?
I was in the pioneer class of dentistry at Makerere University and served as a teacher there in addition to being a dentist. 

What is the staff and student status of the UCU School of Dentistry?
Our plan initially was to incubate the School of Dentistry in the School of Medicine so we admitted students for the two courses at the same time. This worked because there are some common subjects for the two groups of students in the first two and a half years. They are basic and clinical subjects, which they (medical/surgical and dental students) do together. In the third year, the dental students branch out to do purely dental subjects. The students’ numbers are still small because the license we have only allows us to admit 10 students every year. In the first lot, there are nine students and in the second, they are seven. This coming year, as a separate School of Dentistry, there should be a full lot of 10. We also have a number of staff but because the pure dental subjects have not yet started, we are in the process of deploying a full-scale dental staff.

How is the School of Dentistry recruiting and retaining qualified dental staff?
For one, we are working with our partners abroad but the regulatory authority requires that you must have people in-country. We are considering running a post-graduate program so that we generate our own specialists. Once this happens, we don’t have to keep sending staff abroad for training as we can address the problem here.

What is learning like in the COVID pandemic lockdown?
The first class, which is in third year, should be starting fulltime engagement with the pure dental subjects, but there has been a bit of destruction this year (2020) because of the COVID-19 lockdown and the eventual closure of the University by the government to mitigate the spread of the virus. We are resolving that, and we should be engaging our students in third year. They should begin their clinicals now. 

What does it mean to have an Independent School of Dentistry?
This is really good news for us. This is what we wanted from the beginning but the University wanted to delay the process as Makerere did in the beginning as its School of Dentistry was originally incubated within the School of Medicine. When we had the inspectors from the East African Medical Council visit us early this year, they insisted that the two schools should be separated and the University has successfully done this. I think this is the best situation that can happen to the future of dentistry in this country.  UCU has started much better, and I think that this will give room for growth and Ugandans should look forward to a very robust dentistry program.  

When do you plan to increase the students’ enrollment from the cap of 10?
I cannot make a statement on that, but the training of dentists is very expensive. It’s important that we have our feet firmly on the ground before we think of increasing enrollment.  

What are some of the challenges the School faces?
There are certain challenges with any pioneering group. Dentistry is capital intensive in terms of asset investments for the first 5-10 years. At the beginning, you have got to make sure that there is equipment and materials – basically getting the systems going. The other challenge is that we do not have enough trained dentists in this country so you find that when it comes to experts or specialists needed to train students, the country doesn’t have enough of them.  

Why should a student study dentistry at UCU?
First, the University has a strong commitment to ensure that students have very good exposure to modern dentistry. Second, the UCU Faculty of Dentistry’s teaching hospital has a very long history of teaching medical practitioners in Uganda. The University has a partnership with Mengo Hospital, which has a dental unit that has been running for over 40 years now; this unit has trained dentists with internships throughout Uganda. It is recognized as the premium place to go for hands-on dental studies.  

What is the ratio of qualified dentists to patients in Uganda?
I don’t have the figure off the top of my head but the number of dentists in Uganda is still very small. The qualified dentists in the country could be about 400 trained over time. We are not actually keeping up the number of dentists being trained compared to the population growth rate.  (According to an August 2019 article in the Daily Monitor, quoting the Uganda Dental Association, there is one dentist for every 142,000 Ugandans.  This compares to 60 dentists per 100,000 people in the United States.)

How has COVID-19 impacted on the training of dentists and practice in Uganda?
Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, we were locked down and the restrictions that were put in place by government to make sure that the spread of COVID-19 is curtailed have made sure that our university was closed. This has been a very big challenge in terms of teaching but also dentistry is a very practical course, which you can’t teach and practice without meeting people and touching them. This has raised very serious infection controls and questions that have not yet been fully answered. 

What are the overall challenges of training dentists in Uganda?
One is the cost of equipment.  Dentistry is a very practical course that you cannot train just theoretically. You need to have materials, and all these are imported. The second major challenge is training personnel. Thankfully, there is a lot that can happen in our digital age in terms of getting resources from elsewhere. 

How expensive is it to run a dental school in Uganda?
I don’t have exact figures but just think about the fact that apart from the tuition that students pay, you have got to buy materials and equipment that are all imported. Some of these can stay for a while while others are consumables and don’t stay for so long. Those things add to the cost of training a dentist. I also can say that the amount of fees that students pay for these courses are supplemented if you consider what it costs to train a dentist or a doctor. 

How is the job market for graduates of Bachelor of Dental Medicine in Uganda?
We are in a situation now where our population is moving more away from eating the natural foods. There is a lot more consumption of refined foods and sugars, which are creating a crisis of dental health in the country. But it is not as widely known as other life-threatening conditions.  I can therefore predict that the demand for dentists in Uganda is just going to continue growing beside the fact that the population is also growing. It outstrips the rate at which dental professions are being trained. So, the demand is there that anyone who sets up a good quality practice will be able to do well and anyone working in government hospitals will have a lot of work. 

The East African Medical and Dental Practitioners Council early in 2020 placed certain requirements on the UCU School of Medicine. What are some of the things the University did to comply with the Council’s conditions?
One of the things was to separate the School of Dentistry from the School of Medicine, and that has happened. The council was also very keen to see that the School of Dentistry is well equipped, which also is being addressed, plus staffing. UCU has actually done what was being required of it, and that is why our accreditation was continued.  

The Faculty is receiving dental equipment donated from the USA to boost training of students. Who is donating the equipment?
At the moment, we have firm commitment from an organization called Midmark in the United States donating dental chairs, and we are very grateful for them. These are very good quality chairs, which are on their way already. We do have UCU Partners in the United States; that organization is coordinating this arrangement. They also helped us get some chairs from China. This is critical and very foundational for any kind of dental school so we are very grateful. They have a very big heart to help UCU or parts of the world that are not well resourced as where they are.  

What is the financial value of the equipment?
I have not seen the figures yet but about the dental chairs, we are talking about tens of thousands of dollars. Especially those from the United States. It was a very generous donation.

How is the equipment going to help in training the dental students?
It’s foundational. Dentists have to be trained with equipment. I travel to parts of the country and someone tells me that we have a dental problem. I can see it and I know what to do but without the tools, I cannot do anything so having the equipment is very critical. Without them you can’t train a dentist. 

Do you have another word to the people who gave UCU the equipment?
We have a lot of heartfelt gratitude that the donors were able to see this need and also saw it fit to respond to it. When you train a doctor, you have actually invested in a lot of lives because that doctor if well trained will go on to work for a few more decades. They are going to save so many lives. So, this is what I see here–the people who have given so generously have sowed into the future for our children who are going to train. They will be treating our growing population and not only here. Such students end up serving different parts of the world and that is how those who have contributed will be rewarded. May the Lord richly bless them. 

What are some of the future plans for the UCU School of Dentistry?
We need to transition the School to one that is offering post-graduate programs and that is critical for research but also to building our teaching capacity and a pool of dental specialists in the country. Secondarily, in the long run we would like to see that we have a more purpose-built facility. We are adapting a facility that has been so graciously provided by Mengo Hospital and as we move into the future, we need to have one that is purpose-built for teaching of dental students. Lastly, we look forward to introducing other general courses that can still provide community service.

Midmark donates $141,000 in dental equipment to UCU School of Dentistry


After several months of waiting, modern training equipment arrived in mid-February for use by the newly designated Uganda Christian University School of Dentistry. On February 19, 2021, Uganda Partners published a story on the big picture related to the equipment. This story, which was written in part in December 2020, narrows on the contributions specific to the USA-based Midmark and MedShare entities. Tomorrow’s story will highlight the new UCU dean for the dentistry school. The week will conclude with stories about students.

Uganda Christian University (UCU) has received a consignment of dental equipment worth $141,488 (over sh520m) donated by Midmark, a USA-based manufacturer of medical and dental tools. 

The equipment was delivered to the UCU School of Dentistry in Mengo, Kampala, courtesy of MedShare, a nonprofit organization that helps send medical supplies and equipment to hospitals around the world. The equipment includes: five Ultracomfort dental chairs; LED Dental Light; Separator Tank Assembly, a Powervac P7 Base; Powerair Oil-less Compressor and a Midmark M3 Steam Sterilizer, 230V.  

The Dean of the UCU School of Dentistry, Dr. James Magara, described the donation as generous, critical and foundational in setting up a dental training lab. UCU started an independent School of Dentistry in the middle of 2020 and is in the process of equipping its training laboratories.   

“We have a lot of heartfelt gratitude that the donors were able to see this need and also saw it fit to respond to it,” Dr. Magara said. “They have a very big heart to help UCU or parts of the world that are not well resourced as where they are. When you train a doctor, you have actually invested in a lot of lives because that doctor if well trained will go on to work for a few more decades.” 

Joana Bideri, a third-year student of dentistry, also praised the donation. “The dental chairs in particular will help us get used to using them before graduating,” she said. 

Mark Bartels, the Executive Director of the UCU Partners said Doug Fountain, the former UCU Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Development and External Relations, connected his organization (UCU Partners) to Midmark. Doug is the current Executive Director for Christian Connections in International Health, an organization that promotes health and Christian perspectives. The organization shares information and provides a forum for dialogue, networking, advocacy and fellowship to a spectrum of Christian organizations and individuals working in international health. 

Doug expressed excitement that Midmark donated dental equipment to UCU for training of a new cadre of dentists. 

“This is one of the most overlooked areas of health professional training as good dentistry affects health, self-image and nutrition for men, women and children,” he said. “I came to know them (Midmark) through another association several years ago and had the chance to share about UCU several times with one of their executives. This donation is a great example of partnership done well – timely assessment of need and information sharing, coordination with local partners, understanding of what the donors will need. Now let’s see this make a difference in the lives of the people of Uganda.”

According to Mark, in 2019 when former UCU Vice Chancellor, Dr. John Senyonyi, was on a working visit to the United States, he made a connection with MedShare. The organization (MedShare) helps in shipping donated medical and dental supplies to hospitals and medical schools around the world. In addition to coordinating the shipping MedShare donated the medical supplies and equipment that accompanied the dental equipment on the 40 foot container.  

“After receiving the items from Midmark, MedShare added more medical supplies and equipment and sent the container to Uganda,” Mark said, adding that UCU Partners contributors provided $25,000 (over sh92m) for the container. “This project relied on the generosity of Midmark, MedShare and hundreds of individuals who donated to UCU Partners.”

“UCU Partners is grateful to be in partnership with UCU and the School of Medicine and School of Dentistry and to provide some of the equipment needed to train the next generation of doctors and dentists in Uganda,” Mark noted. “We believe that as UCU trains medical and dental students in a Christ-centered context, they will be prepared to serve and make a difference to thousands who very much need quality medical and dental care.” 

With the statistics from the Uganda Dental Association indicating one dentist for every 142,000 Ugandans, Midmark’s donations comes as a “God sent gift” to bridge the doctor to patient gap in the country, Mark said. 

Mitch Eiting, the global philanthropic and corporate giving manager for Midmark also said the organization was very excited to work with Uganda Christian University Partners to donate dental equipment to the UCU School of Dentistry. 

“We believe this equipment will help support the dental school by allowing students to continue focusing on the technical skills needed to treat patients successfully. Also, we are pleased that the additional equipment will allow the school to increase student registration, leading to more dental professionals much in demand in Uganda,” Eiting said.

UCU Schools of Dentistry and Medicine acquire nearly $400,000 in modern training equipment

Uganda Christian University (UCU) has acquired state-of-the-art dental and medical equipment worth sh1.46bn ($397,855) to boost the training of students at its dentistry and medical schools in Mengo.

On February 18, University top management received equipment that included 5 dental suites, LED dental lights, a separator tank assembly, a powervac P7 base, powerair oil-less compressors and a Midmark M3 Steam Sterilizer, 230V.

Speaking at the function on the UCU main campus in Mukono, the University’s Vice Chancellor Associate Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi, revealed that all of the dental equipment was donated to the University by Midmark, a US-based manufacturer of medical and dental tools while the medical equipment was donated by MedShare, another US based organization that procures medical donations and helps ship them to hospitals and medical schools around the world.

The donation from Midmark was worth over sh520m ($141,722).

“We are now getting to where UCU should be,” said Assoc. Prof. Mushengyezi. “We want UCU to set the pace in the training of a wholesome individual. From today bring your children to study dentistry at UCU because they will get the best training.”

Mushengyezi added that with the newly acquired equipment, UCU is now compliant with the set standards of the East African Community (EAC) Partner States National Medical and Dental Practitioner’s Council to run a full-fledged dentistry school.   

In 2020, the Council identified a number of infrastructure gaps at the School of Dentistry, including the need for certain equipment.
UCU made the necessary improvements and continued to rapidly acquire more dental and medical equipment.

Dr. John Kitayimbwa, the University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, noted that UCU is working very hard to ensure that it sends to the job market well trained Christian medical and dental practitioners to transform the two professions.

Kitayimbwa added that with the new dental suites, the ratio of students to the training equipment at the UCU Dentistry School is almost 1:1, which is an assurance of quality education to the leaners. 

He commended Midmark for donating the equipment and Uganda Partners in the US for ensuring that the donated equipment was delivered to the University. The donated equipment from the US was delivered free of charge to UCU due to the generosity of many individuals who donated to Uganda Partners to make the shipment possible, and the work of MedShare in packing and shipping the container. “This would not have been possible without the generosity of both Midmark and MedShare. MedShare’s expertise in shipping medical supplies overseas was an essential part of this process.”

The Dean of the UCU School of Dentistry, Dr. James Magara, described the donation from Midmark as generous, critical and foundational in setting up a dental training lab.

“It’s very expensive to train a doctor,” he said. “If the purchase of the equipment had been left to us, we would not have been able to achieve it.”

Mushengyezi disclosed that while all of the dental equipment donated by Midmark would go to the School of Dentistry, some of the medical equipment donated by MedShare will be given to hospitals that partner with the School of Medicine for clinical training, include Mengo Hospital, Mukono Church of Uganda Hospital and Mukono Government of Uganda Hospital. He said the hospitals are key partners of UCU in the training of the medical and dentistry students.
