What will we experience on our pilgrimage to Uganda?

During our pilgrimage to Uganda, we experience the ways that God has worked through the history of Uganda to establish the Church there. We will see how the work of British missionaries in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s brought the Gospel to Uganda. We will understand how God worked through the martyrs to deeply establish the Church in Uganda. And we will engage the work of the East African Revival to understand how it has constantly renewed the church in Uganda for the last century.

We will also experience ways that God is currently working–in the Church of Uganda (including Uganda Christian University) and through Ugandan Christians. We will experience the work of the Church and Christians throughout various aspects of society. We will see how Uganda Christian University (UCU) is training students to serve their communities in so many ways and see how UCU alumni are engaging the challenges faced by Ugandan society and leading the institutions and organizations that seek to solve these challenges.

While the specific activities for a given pilgrimage cannot be specified in advance, following are some of the activities and experiences common to our pilgrimages.

Namirembe Hill: This is the location of early British missionaries in Uganda. It is also the site of St. Paul’s Cathedral, where we may join Sunday worship. In addition, it is the site of one of the key preliminary events of the East African Revival.
Uganda Martyrs Museum: This is the site of the martyrdom of more than 20 young Christians by the Kabaka (king) of Buganda in 1886. The museum tells the story of these martyrs and the spread of the Gospel in the aftermath.
Uganda Christian University: We will spend time at the main campus located in Mukono (about 1 hour outside of Kampala). With more than 12,000 students across 6 campuses, UCU is the premier private university in Uganda, with programs in medicine, dentistry, law, communications, education, business, engineering, technology, social sciences, agriculture, and more.
UCU Alumni & Ugandan Christians: We will visit Ugandans living faithful lives of service in any number of settings, including education, healthcare, business, law, social services, technology, and others.
Church of Uganda: We may visit a parish or diocese of the Church of Uganda to learn more about how the church here serves its members and society. With 39 diocese and 16 million members, the Church of Uganda reaches every corner of Uganda with the Gospel.
Uganda Christian University School of Medicine: Located at Mengo Hospital, the first hospital established in Uganda, the School of Medicine & School of Dentistry train doctors and dentists for the acute healthcare need in Uganda.
God’s Creation: While all of Uganda is beautiful (Winston Churchill called in ‘the Pearl of Africa’) for those pilgrimages that choose to do so, we will visit one of Uganda’s national parks for a traditional East African safari. Some trips may also visit Lake Victoria where the Nile River originates.
