Dr. Kintu Benoni strikes one as a confident and passionate dentist. Indeed, he is. And that is part of why he is in a lucrative, private practice in Kampala.
Behind his story lies a life marked by humble beginnings, immense challenges and an unwavering spirit. Benoni’s childhood was shaped by hardship and loss. He lost his father during the war that brought Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni into power in 1986. Raised by a peasant mother in a large family, resources were always scarce. Despite this, Benoni, the seventh of 11 children, was always determined to rise above his circumstances and make a meaningful impact.
What attracted him to dentistry was more than passion for oral health. It was a genuine desire to serve his community by improving people’s well being. He realized that good dental care could transform lives, especially for those who lacked access. Growing up with financial constraints taught him resourcefulness, discipline and perseverance. These challenges forged his character, instilling an unshakeable work ethic and a “never-give-up” spirit.
Benoni chose Uganda Christian University (UCU) because of its commitment to holistic education grounded in values and community service. He believed UCU would equip him not only with technical dental skills which he had sought, but also with the ethical foundation necessary to serve others effectively. His years at the UCU School of Dentistry were intense and demanding, filled with rigorous lectures, practical sessions and long nights of study. Though moments of doubt arose, his passion and vision kept him focused.
Starting his own dental practice was no small feat. With limited capital, just sh150,000 (about $42), Benoni began modestly, focusing on providing quality care and reinvesting every shilling earned. The first year was a whirlwind of victories and challenges. Every patient he treated and every smile he restored was a win. However, he also faced the realities of running a business, managing equipment and marketing a new practice. The high demand for quality dental care in Kampala was both a surprise and a motivation to expand.
Balancing the medical and business sides of his work has been a delicate, but essential task. For Benoni, patient care is always a top priority. The business aspect supports this goal by enabling investments in advanced technology and clinic expansion to reach more people efficiently and sustainably. His clinics reflect this commitment through the use of modern equipment and a focus on creating a comfortable and empathetic environment.
Three core values guide Benoni’s practice:
- He believes in empathy, excellence and education.
- He understands that dental visits can be intimidating, so he strives to put himself in his patients’ shoes, ensuring they feel comfortable and understood.
- He emphasizes delivering the highest standard of care and empowering patients by clearly explaining their conditions and treatment options, to build confidence and promote long-term oral health.
Benoni is not only a dentist, but also a devoted father with his oldest child 13 years and the youngest five. His journey is a testament to the power of starting small, but with a big dream.
Reflecting on his journey, Benoni offers encouragement to dental students who might feel overwhelmed or tempted to give up.
“Your current struggles are building the foundation for your future triumphs,” he said.
He urges current students to persevere, absorb knowledge and embrace their unique strength, regardless of economic status..With relentless hard work and a commitment to quality, they, too, can build something meaningful and impactful.
